Community Building

The Community building process under way in the region is a part of a global endeavor to raise capacity at the neighborhood level to apply the Teachings of Baha'u'llah in action.

The Bahá’í Approach to Social Transformation

The Bahá’í Faith approaches social change differently from many contemporary models. Rather than emphasizing material resources, it focuses on the true source of transformation: people and their spiritual and intellectual capacities.

Bahá’í community-building is a grassroots process that strengthens both the spiritual and material life of a community. Step by step, individuals and families develop the capacity to contribute to collective well-being. As these capacities grow, communities become able to extend their influence outward, assisting and accompanying neighboring areas with increasing levels of complexity and coherence.

In an era when many political, social, and economic systems are faltering—often giving rise to division, fear, and discouragement—the Bahá’í community works to build a foundation grounded in spiritual principles. Such a foundation offers stability and hope, enabling communities to withstand and ultimately transcend the pressures of a disintegrating world order.

‘Abdu’l-Bahá describes this reality with reassuring clarity:

“Be not concerned with the smallness of your numbers, neither be oppressed by the multitude of an unbelieving world. Five grains of wheat will be endued with heavenly blessing, whereas a thousand tons of tares will yield no results or effect. One fruitful tree will be conducive to the life of society …”
Tablets of the Divine Plan, p. 95.

Across the globe, groups of people are engaging in a long-term process of learning—discovering what it means to cultivate communities that are spiritually vibrant and materially prosperous..

Across the globe, Bahá’í communities engage in four core activities—educational and devotional in nature—that nurture spiritual qualities, strengthen unity, and build the capacity of individuals to serve. Open to all, these gatherings take place in homes, neighborhoods, universities, and workplaces, wherever friends come together to learn and contribute to the betterment of society

Core Activities That Build Community

  • Devotional Gatherings

Devotional gatherings create spaces where prayer, reflection, and the Word of God uplift the hearts and inspire collective purpose. These simple, reverent gatherings welcome people of all backgrounds to come together, build unity, and strengthen the spiritual atmosphere of the community.

  • Children’s Classes

Recognizing that children are the most precious treasure a community can possess, Bahá’í children’s classes focus on nurturing spiritual qualities such as kindness, truthfulness, and generosity. Through songs, stories, and engaging lessons, children develop a strong moral foundation that prepares them to

  • Junior Youth Empowerment Program

Designed for young people ages 11 to 14, this program empowers junior youth to navigate a crucial stage of life with purpose and clarity. Through study, service projects, artistic expression, and group discussion, they strengthen their intellectual and spiritual capacities and learn to contribute positively to the well-being of their neighborhoods

  • Study Circles

Study circles bring youth and adults together to explore the Bahá’í writings and develop practical skills for service. Guided by the sequence of courses created by the Ruhi Institute, participants engage in collective learning and action—leading to initiatives such as home visits, children’s classes, and devotional gatherings that enrich the community

The Purpose Behind These Efforts

The Bahá’í teachings describe a “twofold moral purpose”: to develop one’s own spiritual qualities and to contribute to the transformation of society. The core activities help people pursue both aims simultaneously—strengthening character while building patterns of collective life rooted in unity, justice, and service.

The Universal House of Justice describes this civilization-building process as an expression of the very purpose of religion:

“…in the friends’ growing consciousness that their efforts to foster inner transformation, to widen the circle of unity, to collaborate with others in the field of service, to help populations take charge of their own spiritual, social, and economic development—and, through all such efforts, to bring about the betterment of the world—express the very purpose of religion itself.”
– The Universal House of Justice, April 2016.

The global Bahá’í community invites all who wish to contribute to this long-term process of learning and service. Though its full implications will unfold over generations, the impact is already visible in neighborhoods where unity is strengthening, capacities are growing, and hope is rising.

A more peaceful and just world may be closer than we imagine—and each of these activities is a small but significant step toward that future.
